Health officials have issued an alert due to a rise in the drug-resistant strain of the shigella bacteria and considered it a "serious public health threat."

The CDC issued a warning on Friday over the surge in serious illnesses, which can be spread by several means, including changing an infected baby′s diaper, touching one′s mouth while carrying the bacteria on ones hands, consuming tainted food or water, or through sexual contact. The infection is spread very quickly because only a small amount of the bacteria is required to induce an infection.

The Shigella infection causes bloody diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps in addition to feeling the urge to poop though the intestines are already empty is additional symptoms. Most people may heal themselves with rest and drinks, while severe cases may require antibiotic therapy. Yet, there is an increase in bacterial strains that are resistant to the medicine.

A rise from 0% to 5% of all shigella cases in the U.S. between 2015 and 2022 was caused by antibiotic-resistant infections. According to an analysis, 13% of incidents included women, 82% involved men, and 5% involved kids. Also, 88% of those participating in a small study reported male-to-male sexual contact.

The risk of getting the infection is highest among little children, the homeless, overseas travelers, those with compromised immune systems, those with HIV, and males who engage in male-to-male intercourse.

The CDC has urged Health care professionals to watch out for and report any cases of these illnesses. The ministry will hold a webinar to inform personnel in public health about the pathogen.
